Security In Surveillance

   Recently I just finished reading the book 1984 By: George Orwell. In this book there is no such thing as privacy, not even in the recesses of your own head. In every room of this book a telescreen can be found on a wall that simultaneously transmits as well as receives. This screen watches your every movement and is even able to read your mind. This got me thinking about just how many cameras there are in our society today. Everywhere you go you are being video taped and who really knows if it's for our protection.
   In criminal cases video footage taken from buses has been used for crimes happening across the street from where buses are parked. As soon as you walk outside it is almost a guarantee you are being recorded. Although these recordings have solved many criminal cases it is also restricting our privacy.
   Even in the safety of our own home we are being recorded. Web cams on computers can be hacked into and people can watch you from them. Also some gaming systems come with video cameras that record you while you play. If you own a XBox Kinect than you are being recorded while you play. You can even save and publish your videos to the Internet. It's insane the amount of surveillance we have.
   We can avoid being recorded in our own homes by simply covering the cameras when they are not in use, it's not like they are hidden. The cameras that videotape you outside are not being constantly watched so we have no need to worry about them at this point in time. In 1984 the people have to be assumed they are being watched constantly not just recorded to maybe or maybe not watched later as we are. Also unlike 1984 as a citizen of Canada I can assume that the government is not interested in my daily activities.
   Lucky for us it's not the same as in the book 1984 yet. Our thoughts are still our own and there are some rooms in our own home where there are no cameras or microphones recording us. We still have a modicum of privacy, but how long will this last? Honestly, I would not be surprised if one day we are being monitored every second of every day, however just as they always have been, I believe our thoughts will remain our own.
